Alexandre Chernogrivov
"Human Traces"

Although this artist has only recently emerged on
the scene, he has already firmly staked out a unique
niche in St. Petersburg's high-end photography. At
the start of his career, Chernogrivov was primarily
preoccupied with nude models but not as a subject-matter
in itself; more likely, he sought an initial impulse
for expressive ideas and complex representational associations.
Identified with the progress of a thought or emotion,
body movements acquire an increasingly unrestrained,
mesmerizing rendering in his photographs, eventually
approaching an abstraction as closely as the nature
of photography would allow it.Indulging in sophisticated
technical experimentation, Chernogrivov effectively
departs from conventional photography, producing works
where the "imprint" of a human body is perceived
as a distant memory of progress in space, as a visual
echo, an incarnation of his vision not of physical,
but of psychic energy. Chernogrivov's enormous sheets,
nervy and ornate, emanate rare power bordering on that
of an artifact. They fit in perfectly with the modern
photographic mainstream.
