Solid professional training is very apparent in the oeuvre of this artist: only too often does innovation reveal itself as a hoax if not backed by the gold reserve of serious schooling.

Zagorov has always gravitated toward humungous, overpowering forms, serene and powerful simplicity. Monumentality is at the core of all his paintings, even those of a modest size. His early works, although quite figurative, are saturated with dark yet somehow bright inflorescences that inspire awe with their uncanny inner tension. In the vein of the old Russian masters, Zagorov's works are rich in psychological content, yet the taciturnity of their powerful color and form refers them unerringly to the end of the 20th century. Zagorov is, first and foremost, a painter. His resonant, sublime, open and austere color scheme, his ability to reconcile mutinous inflorescences, to melt them into the canvas surface, are some of the distinctions that make him unique among St. Petersburg artists.

A pungent realistic motif develops flesh, while a reminiscence, a thought, a cluster of emotions bring forth a different world that owes its existence solely to the artist's will. He paints the inner world with the same clarity, even accuracy, as he paints the world outside. Imagination and emotional memory are as real to him as a boat or a flower.

Essentially, Vladimir Zagorov's world is simple and open to primal, unadulterated values. Every subject-matter finds its own method of expression, its own technique, but hard work and difficult choices are behind each of his works. Zagorov remains himself in every painting, yet makes the world so much clearer and brighter for the spectator.
